Kia America, Inc.: 2023 Sportage Recalled Due to Potential Loss of Power Brake Assist

Summary

Kia America, Inc. is recalling approximately 98,944 of its 2023 Sportage vehicles because of a defect in the braking system. The internal diaphragm in the brake booster may become misaligned, creating a vacuum leak that leads to a sudden loss of power brake assist. While the brakes will still function, the vehicle will require significantly more physical force on the pedal and a longer distance to come to a complete stop. Kia dealers will inspect the brake booster and replace it if necessary at no cost to owners.

Risk

A misaligned brake booster diaphragm causes an internal vacuum leak, which removes the power assistance normally used to help stop the vehicle. This failure can unexpectedly increase the distance required to stop the car, significantly raising the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's documentation or the driver's side door jamb to confirm if you own a 2023 Kia Sportage.
  2. If you own an affected vehicle, contact any authorized Kia dealer to schedule a free inspection of your brake booster assembly.
  3. If the dealer identifies a misaligned diaphragm or vacuum leak during the inspection, they will replace the entire brake booster unit free of charge.
  4. You may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and refer to Kia's internal recall number SC272 for more information.
  5. For further assistance or to check your VIN, call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
