Summary

PACCAR Incorporated is recalling 46 heavy-duty battery electric vehicles, including certain 2022-2023 Peterbilt 579 and 2023 Kenworth T680 models. The vehicles contain incorrect software in the electronic stability control program that may underestimate the weight of the truck. This defect means the vehicles do not comply with federal safety standards for stability control, but dealers can fix the issue with a free software update.

Risk

Because the software underestimates the mass of the vehicle, the electronic stability control system may not perform as intended during driving maneuvers. This reduced performance increases the risk of a loss of control and a subsequent crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking your model and year: 2022-2023 Peterbilt 579 or 2023 Kenworth T680 battery electric heavy-duty trucks.
  2. Contact PACCAR or an authorized dealer to schedule a free software update to correct the stability control program.
  3. If you own a Kenworth vehicle, contact Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5888 regarding recall number 23KWA.
  4. If you own a Peterbilt vehicle, contact Peterbilt customer service at 1-940-591-4220 regarding recall number 23PBA.
  5. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
