Summary

Mazda North American Operations is recalling 14,902 of its 2024 CX-90 and 2025 CX-70 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). A software error in the vehicle's inverter can cause malfunction indicator lights to turn on and lead to a sudden loss of drive power while operating in electric vehicle (EV) mode. To resolve this safety issue, Mazda dealers will provide a free software update for the inverter.

Risk

A sudden loss of drive power while the vehicle is in motion increases the risk of a crash, especially if the failure occurs in high-speed traffic. Mazda reports that improper inverter software is the root cause of this drive power failure.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's recall status by visiting www.nhtsa.gov/recalls or by contacting your local Mazda dealer with your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  2. Contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 (Option 6) to confirm if your specific 2024 CX-90 or 2025 CX-70 plug-in hybrid is affected by recall number 7024J.
  3. Schedule an appointment with an authorized Mazda dealer to have the remedy performed: 'Dealers will install improved inverter software, free of charge.'
  4. Monitor your vehicle for any illuminated malfunction indicator lights (MILs) and safely pull over if you experience a loss of propulsion.
  5. If you have further questions or need assistance, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
