Summary

Kia America, Inc. is recalling approximately 1,243 vehicles, including certain 2023-2024 Niro EV and 2023 EV6 models. A drive shaft in these electric vehicles may have been improperly heat-treated during manufacturing, which can cause the component to break while under load. If the drive shaft breaks, the vehicle will experience an immediate loss of drive power, and dealers will replace the affected drive shaft with a new one free of charge.

Risk

A broken drive shaft leads to a sudden loss of propulsion while driving, which significantly increases the risk of a crash, especially at higher speeds or in heavy traffic.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking your specific model and year: this recall includes certain 2023-2024 Kia Niro EV and 2023 Kia EV6 vehicles.
  2. Contact an authorized Kia dealer to schedule an appointment for a free replacement of the drive shaft.
  3. If you have questions, contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and reference recall number SC295.
  4. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
