Summary

Kia America is recalling approximately 69,038 vehicles, specifically 2021-2022 Sorento and 2021-2023 K5 models. A malfunction in the transmission's electric oil pump can cause the vehicle's 'fail-safe' safety mode to fail, which can result in a total loss of drive power while the vehicle is in motion. To address this issue, Kia dealers will inspect the transmission and replace it if necessary, and will also provide a software update for the transmission control unit at no cost to owners.

Risk

A sudden loss of drive power while driving can prevent the driver from maintaining speed or accelerating, significantly increasing the risk of a collision. This occurs when the transmission pump fails and the vehicle's safety software does not properly engage the limited-mobility backup mode.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle registration or VIN to confirm if you own a 2021-2022 Kia Sorento or a 2021-2023 Kia K5.
  2. Contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 to verify if your specific vehicle is affected by this recall (reference Kia recall number SC250).
  3. Contact an authorized Kia dealer to schedule a free service appointment for a transmission inspection and a software update for the transmission control unit.
  4. If the dealer's inspection identifies a faulty transmission, the entire unit will be replaced free of charge as part of this recall remedy.
  5. For further information, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
