Hyundai Motor America: Loss of Drive Power in Santa Fe, Sonata, Veloster, Santa Cruz, Elantra and Kona

Summary

Hyundai is recalling approximately 56,148 vehicles, including 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Sonata, and Veloster N models, along with 2022 Santa Cruz, Elantra N, and Kona N models. A defect in the transmission oil pump can cause the vehicle's 'fail-safe' drive mode to malfunction, potentially leading to a complete loss of power while driving. To resolve this issue, Hyundai dealers will update the transmission software and replace the entire transmission assembly if necessary at no cost to the owner.

Risk

If the transmission oil pump fails and the fail-safe mode is impaired, the vehicle may lose drive power suddenly. This loss of power while the vehicle is in motion significantly increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Confirm if your vehicle is affected by checking your specific model and year: 2021-2022 Hyundai Santa Fe, Sonata, or Veloster N, or 2022 Santa Cruz, Elantra N, or Kona N.
  2. Contact your local Hyundai dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair, which includes a software update for the transmission control unit and a full transmission replacement if the inspection reveals a defect.
  3. Call Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 and reference recall number 236 for more information regarding this safety campaign.
  4. For additional information, you can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
