Royal Enfield North America Limited: 2017-2021 Himalayan Motorcycles Recalled for Brake Caliper Corrosion

Summary

Royal Enfield is recalling approximately 4,891 Himalayan motorcycles from model years 2017 through 2021. The brake calipers on these motorcycles can corrode when exposed to road salt used during winter months, which may lead to a significant decrease or total loss of braking ability. To fix this safety issue, authorized dealers will replace both the front and rear brake calipers with upgraded parts at no cost to owners.

Risk

Corroded brake calipers can fail to function correctly, causing the motorcycle to lose braking power unexpectedly. This failure significantly increases the risk of a crash, especially in conditions where road salt is present.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your motorcycle is affected by checking if it is a 2017-2021 Royal Enfield Himalayan model.
  2. Contact an authorized Royal Enfield dealer to schedule a free replacement of both your front and rear brake calipers.
  3. If you have questions, contact Royal Enfield customer service at 1-866-600-1122 and mention recall number SC-31.
  4. For further assistance, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
