Navistar, Inc.: 2023 IC CE and IN RE Commercial Buses Recalled for Rear Axle Instability

Summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling 46 of its 2023 IC CE and 2023 IN RE commercial buses because the rear axle may have been installed incorrectly. Specifically, the fasteners connecting the transverse torque arm to the rear axle housing may not have been tightened properly, which can allow the axle to shift from side to side while driving. Navistar dealers will replace and tighten these fasteners for free to ensure the vehicle remains stable.

Risk

A rear axle that moves side-to-side can cause a sudden loss of vehicle handling and control, significantly increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, if the vehicle is unstable during an emergency evacuation, it could lead to injuries for passengers and the driver.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking if it is a 2023 IC CE or 2023 IN RE commercial bus model.
  2. Check your records or contact Navistar's customer service at 1-800-448-7825 to see if your specific vehicle is part of recall number 22528.
  3. Contact an authorized Navistar dealer to schedule a free appointment to have the rear axle fasteners replaced and tightened correctly.
  4. If you have further questions or need assistance, you can call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
