Summary

Navistar, Inc. is recalling approximately 6,948 IC RE, IC EV, and IC CE school buses because the fasteners connecting the rear axle housing to the torque arm may have been tightened incorrectly. This defect can allow the rear axle to shift side to side while driving. Owners of affected 2023 and 2024 models can have their vehicles repaired by a dealer free of charge.

Risk

A loose rear axle can cause the bus to become unstable or lose handling control, significantly increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, the vehicle may become unstable during an emergency evacuation, which increases the risk of injury to passengers.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle records to determine if you own a 2023 IC RE, 2023 IC EV, or 2023-2024 IC CE school bus.
  2. Contact Navistar's customer service at 1-800-448-7825 to verify if your specific vehicle is included in recall number 22527.
  3. Schedule an appointment with an authorized Navistar dealer to have the rear axle fasteners replaced and tightened to the correct specifications at no cost to you.
  4. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
