Honda (American Honda Motor Co.): Brake Booster and Master Cylinder Fastener Issue on Honda and Acura Vehicles

Summary

Honda is recalling approximately 124,077 vehicles, including certain 2020-2021 Civic, 2020-2023 Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Passport, 2021-2022 Pilot, and 2020 Acura MDX models. An improperly assembled fastener may allow the brake master cylinder to separate from the brake booster. Dealers will inspect and repair the brake booster assembly free of charge to ensure the components are properly connected.

Risk

If the brake master cylinder separates from the booster, the driver may experience a sudden loss of brake function. This failure significantly increases the risk of a crash because the vehicle may not be able to stop as intended.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking your specific model and year: 2020-2021 Honda Civic, 2020-2023 Honda Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Honda Passport, 2021-2022 Honda Pilot, or 2020 Acura MDX.
  2. Contact an authorized Honda or Acura dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair of the brake booster assembly.
  3. If you have further questions, contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 and reference recall numbers VEU, AEV, or ZET.
  4. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
