Motiv Power Systems: Loose, Damaged Wires can Cause Loss of Drive Power

Summary

Motiv Power Systems is recalling 13 F-59 school buses from the 2017-2023 model years equipped with EPIC Gen 4 and Gen 5 powertrains. These vehicles may have wiring harnesses missing critical insulation and retention clips, which can lead to 12-volt control wires deteriorating or coming loose. If these wires fail, the vehicle can lose connection to the high-voltage batteries, causing a sudden loss of drive power and increasing the risk of a crash. Motiv field technicians will inspect and repair or replace any damaged or improperly secured wiring free of charge.

Risk

A loss of drive power while the vehicle is in motion can cause an unexpected stall, significantly increasing the likelihood of a collision.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking for Motiv F-59 school buses manufactured between 2017 and 2023 equipped with Gen 4 or Gen 5 EPIC powertrains.
  2. Contact Motiv customer service at 1-650-458-4804 to schedule a free inspection and repair by a field support technician.
  3. If your vehicle shows any signs of power issues or unexpected electrical behavior, prioritize the repair immediately as the fix involves replacing or securing 12-volt control wires showing signs of fatigue or cracking.
  4. For additional information or to verify your VIN, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
