Summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling 41,555 of its 2023 Super Duty F250 and F350 trucks that are equipped with single rear wheels and a 10.5-inch rear axle shaft. The left rear axle shaft in these vehicles may have been improperly heat-treated during the manufacturing process, making it brittle and prone to breaking. Dealers will inspect the date code on the left rear axle shaft and replace it with a new one free of charge if necessary.

Risk

A broken rear axle shaft can cause a sudden loss of drive power or allow the vehicle to roll away when it is parked. Either situation significantly increases the risk of a crash or injury to bystanders.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is a 2023 Ford Super Duty F250 or F350 equipped with single rear wheels and a 10.5-inch rear axle shaft.
  2. Contact an authorized Ford dealer to schedule a free inspection of your left rear axle shaft date code.
  3. If the inspection confirms your axle shaft was manufactured incorrectly, the dealer will replace the axle shaft at no cost to you.
  4. For more information, contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 23S49.
  5. For additional questions, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
