Summary

K2D Foods (doing business as Colorado Premium Foods) is recalling approximately 113,424 pounds of raw ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O103. The recall was initiated after unopened ground beef from a restaurant tested positive for the bacteria during an outbreak investigation. These products were sold in two 24-pound vacuum-packed packages within cardboard boxes labeled as "GROUND BEEF PUCK" and were distributed to restaurants in Florida and Georgia.

Risk

Consumption of product contaminated with E. coli O103 can cause diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting. While most people recover within a week, some—particularly young children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems—can develop a severe type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

What You Should Do

  1. Check your refrigerator or freezer for 24-lb. cardboard boxes containing vacuum-packed "GROUND BEEF PUCK" with Use Thru dates of 4/14/19, 4/17/19, 4/20/19, 4/23/19, 4/28/19, or 4/30/19.
  2. Verify if the box features establishment number "EST. 51308" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
  3. Return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund, throw it away, or contact the manufacturer for further instructions.
  4. Ensure all ground beef is cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F as measured by a food thermometer to kill harmful bacteria.
  5. If you have questions regarding the recall, contact Ashley Barnes, Customer Service Director at Colorado Premium Foods, at (970) 313-4400.
  6. Call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 1-888-674-6854 for additional food safety questions.
