John Deere Recalls Lawn and Garden Tractors Due to Laceration Hazard (Recall Alert)

Summary

Deere & Company has recalled about 5,400 John Deere models X710, X730, X734, X738, and X739 lawn and garden tractors because the safety system designed to shut off mower blades in reverse can fail. This defect allows the blades to continue spinning while the tractor is backing up, creating a serious risk of injury to bystanders. These green and yellow tractors were sold at John Deere dealers nationwide from December 2015 through July 2016. Owners should stop using the tractors and contact a dealer for a free repair.

Risk

The reverse implement option (RIO) system can fail, allowing mower blades to remain powered while the vehicle is in reverse. This poses a severe laceration hazard to anyone near the rear of the machine.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your tractor's model number, which is printed on both sides of the engine hood, to see if it is model X710, X730, X734, X738, or X739.
  2. Locate the serial number on the right side of the machine, just below the foot rest. Verify if it begins with '1M0X'.
  3. If your tractor is a match, immediately stop using the machine and contact an authorized John Deere dealer to schedule a free repair.
  4. You can visit www.deere.com and click on 'Recall Information' under the 'Services & Support' menu to view the full list of affected serial numbers.
  5. For more information or to find a dealer, contact Deere & Company at 800-537-8233 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or Saturday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. ET.
  6. For additional questions, call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
