Summary

Deere & Company has recalled about 4,700 John Deere Gator RSX850i recreational utility vehicles because the oil filters can leak. These vehicles, manufactured between May and October 2012, were available in Base, Sport, and Trail models in colors including Camo, olive and black, or green and yellow. The manufacturer identified pinholes or cracks in oil filters supplied by an engine vendor that were not built to the correct specifications. There have been four reports of fires resulting from this defect, though no injuries have been reported. Consumers should stop using the vehicles immediately and contact a dealer for a free repair.

Risk

Defective oil filters can develop cracks or pinholes that allow oil to leak onto hot engine components, which can cause the vehicle to catch fire. Four incidents of vehicle fires have already been reported.

What You Should Do

  1. Stop using your recalled utility vehicle immediately until it has been inspected and repaired.
  2. Check the hood of your vehicle for the model name 'RSX850i' and confirm it is a Base, Sport, or Trail model.
  3. Locate the serial number on the rear frame of the vehicle, just above the receiver hitch.
  4. Verify if your serial number falls within the following ranges: Base (1M0850TB++M010009 thru 1M0850TB++M010778), Sport (1M0850TS++M010001 thru 1M0850TS++M012077), or Trail (1M0850TT++M010001 thru 1M0850TT++M012867).
  5. Contact an authorized John Deere dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair of the oil filter. You can reach Deere & Company at 800-537-8233 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET on Saturdays, or visit www.johndeere.com.
