Proterra Operating Company, Inc.: Catalyst and ZX5 Transit Buses Recalled for Inverter Failure and Power Loss

Summary

Proterra Operating Company is recalling 238 of its 2019-2022 40' and 35' Catalyst 800V transit buses and 40' and 35' ZX5 800V transit buses, all equipped with the ProDrive 1.0 system. An internal transistor within the vehicle's inverter can overheat and fail, causing the bus to suddenly lose both drive power and power steering. To address this safety issue, Proterra will have dealers replace the faulty inverters with new ones at no cost to owners.

Risk

If the inverter transistor fails, the bus may experience a sudden loss of propulsion and power steering assist. This makes the vehicle much harder to control and increases the risk of a crash, especially in traffic or during turns.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your fleet includes 2019-2022 Proterra Catalyst (35' or 40' 800V) or ZX5 (35' or 40' 800V) transit buses equipped with the ProDrive 1.0 system.
  2. Contact Proterra customer service at 1-864-438-0000 to verify if your specific vehicle identification numbers (VINs) are included in this recall.
  3. Schedule a service appointment with an authorized dealer to have the inverter replaced free of charge.
  4. For additional information or to check your VIN online, visit www.nhtsa.gov/recalls or call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
