Summary

ZF North America is recalling approximately 2,493 park brake actuation air brake systems and specific Haldex inversion relay valves used in commercial vehicles. An internal piston within the inversion valve can fail, which causes a delay in the parking brake engaging. This delay can lead to the vehicle moving unexpectedly even after the parking brake is applied, which increases the risk of a crash. The affected parts include Haldex inversion relay valves with part numbers 9718990020 and RKN28032.

Risk

An internal component failure in the valve prevents the parking brake from activating immediately. This can result in unintended vehicle rollaway, which poses a serious risk of collisions and injury to bystanders or drivers.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's maintenance records or inspect the air brake system for Haldex inversion relay valves with part numbers 9718990020 or RKN28032.
  2. If you are an owner of aftermarket equipment containing these valves, contact ZF customer service at 1-734-416-6200 to arrange for a free replacement.
  3. If your vehicle was equipped with these valves by the original manufacturer, contact your vehicle manufacturer's service department to determine the specific remedy and schedule a repair.
  4. For additional information or to report safety concerns, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
