Summary

BMW of North America, LLC is recalling 8,725 model year 2018-2022 X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i, and X3 M vehicles. The bolts that secure the interior rear cargo rail may become damaged and fail during a rear-end collision, which can cause the cargo rail to detach inside the vehicle. Even if your vehicle was previously repaired under a different recall (number 24V-534) for this same issue, it must be brought in again to receive new, updated replacement bolts.

Risk

If the rear cargo rail detaches during a crash, it can become a dangerous projectile or fail to secure cargo, significantly increasing the risk of injury to occupants inside the vehicle.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's registration or the driver's side door jamb for the model name and year to see if you own a 2018-2022 BMW X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i, or X3 M.
  2. Contact an authorized BMW dealer to schedule a free appointment to have the rear cargo rail attachment bolts replaced.
  3. Inform the dealer if your vehicle was previously repaired under recall number 24V-534, as this new repair is still required for your safety.
  4. For more information, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
  5. Call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional recall information.
