Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 282,387 vehicles including certain 2018-2023 X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i, and X3 M models. The attachment bolts for the interior rear cargo rail can become damaged during a rear-end collision, which may cause the entire rail to break loose from the vehicle. BMW dealers will replace the affected cargo rail attachment bolts with new ones at no cost to the owner.

Risk

If the interior cargo rail detaches during a rear-end crash, it can become a projectile inside the cabin or allow cargo to shift violently, significantly increasing the risk of injury to the driver and passengers.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle's registration or look at the door jamb sticker to see if you own a 2018-2023 BMW X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i, or X3 M.
  2. Contact an authorized BMW dealer to schedule a free appointment to have the rear cargo rail attachment bolts replaced.
  3. If you have further questions or need help locating a dealer, contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
  4. For additional information, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
