2025-2026 Equinox EV Recalled for Insufficient Pedestrian Warning Sound

Summary

General Motors is recalling 81,177 of its 2025-2026 Equinox EV vehicles because the pedestrian alert sound system may not produce a loud enough sound when the vehicle transitions from being stopped to moving at low speeds. This failure means the vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 141 regarding minimum sound requirements for hybrid and electric vehicles. Dealers will update the body control module software free of charge, and this fix may also be delivered via an over-the-air (OTA) update.

Risk

If the vehicle does not emit a sufficient warning sound, pedestrians may be unaware of a moving vehicle in their vicinity, which increases the likelihood of a crash or injury.

What You Should Do

  1. This recall involves 2025-2026 General Motors Equinox EV vehicles that may not meet federal sound standards for electric vehicles.
  2. Identify if your vehicle is affected by searching your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA.gov recall website.
  3. Contact a General Motors dealer to schedule a free software update for the body control module.
  4. If your vehicle is equipped for over-the-air updates, the software fix may be provided remotely; check your vehicle's infotainment system for pending software update notifications.
  5. For further information, contact GM customer service at 1-800-222-1020 and mention recall number N252530690.
