Summary

General Motors is recalling approximately 449,671 vehicles including certain 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 models. The electronic brake control module software may fail to display a warning light when the vehicle loses brake fluid, which can result in a failure to meet federal safety standards. Owners will receive a free software update to fix this issue, which can be performed over-the-air or by a dealership.

Risk

If the low brake fluid warning light fails to illuminate, a driver may continue operating the vehicle with insufficient fluid, which can significantly reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking your specific make and model: 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, or Escalade ESV, and 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 or GMC Sierra 1500.
  2. Check if your vehicle can receive over-the-air (OTA) updates; if so, the Electronic Brake Control Module software will be updated automatically without a dealer visit.
  3. If your vehicle is not equipped for OTA updates or you prefer in-person service, contact a local GMC (1-800-462-8782), Chevrolet (1-800-222-1020), or Cadillac (1-800-458-8006) dealer to schedule a free software update using recall number N242447990.
  4. Monitor your vehicle's braking performance closely and check brake fluid levels manually until the software update is confirmed as installed.
  5. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
