BMW of North America, LLC: Luxury Sedans and i5/i7 Models Recalled for Hands-On Detection Failure

Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 12,296 vehicles, including various 2023-2024 7 Series, 5 Series, and electric i5 and i7 models. An incorrectly attached ground connection to the steering wheel can cause the hands-on detection system to stop working. This defect prevents the car from detecting if the driver's hands are on the wheel, which may stop the Emergency Stopping Assistant from activating if the driver becomes unresponsive. Dealers will inspect and reattach the ground connection free of charge.

Risk

If the hands-on detection system fails, the vehicle will not realize the driver's hands have left the steering wheel. This prevents the emergency safety systems from engaging during a medical crisis or driver inattention, significantly increasing the risk of a high-speed crash.
