Zero Motorcycles Inc.: Accessory Chain Kits Recalled Due to Motor Malfunction and Crash Risk

Summary

Zero Motorcycles Inc. is recalling 306 accessory chain kits (part numbers 10-08127 and 10-08140) because the included installation instructions are incorrect. If these instructions were followed, a motor shaft magnet could become dislocated while you are riding, which can cause the motor to behave unexpectedly or even shift into reverse. To fix this safety issue, dealers will install a new motor with a correctly pre-placed sprocket chain kit at no cost to owners.

Risk

A dislocated motor shaft magnet can lead to an unexpected motor response, such as the motorcycle suddenly shifting into reverse while in motion, which significantly increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your motorcycle or records to determine if an accessory chain kit with part number 10-08127 or 10-08140 was installed on your vehicle.
  2. Contact an authorized Zero Motorcycles dealer to schedule a free repair; dealers will install a new motor with a pre-placed sprocket chain kit as necessary.
  3. If you have further questions, contact Zero customer service at 1-888-841-8085 and reference recall number SV-RCL-023-014.
  4. For additional information, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
