Ford Motor Company: 2023-2024 Transit Vehicles Recalled for Inadequate Rear Axle Lubrication

Summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling 113,320 of its 2023-2024 Ford Transit vehicles because they may have been manufactured with an insufficient amount of rear axle lubricant. This lack of lubrication can cause the rear axle bearings to overheat and seize, which can lead to the wheels locking up or the driveshaft breaking and separating while driving. Owners of these vehicles will receive a free inspection and, if necessary, the dealer will replace the axle bearings or the entire axle assembly.

Risk

A seized bearing can cause the rear wheels to lock suddenly while the vehicle is in motion, or cause the driveshaft to disconnect. If the driveshaft disconnects while the vehicle is parked without the parking brake, the vehicle could roll away, significantly increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is a 2023 or 2024 Ford Transit model.
  2. Contact your local Ford dealer to schedule a free inspection of your vehicle's rear axle assembly.
  3. If the inspection reveals damage, the dealer will replace the axle bearings or the entire axle assembly free of charge.
  4. If you have additional questions, contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 24S05.
  5. For more information, you may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
