Summary

Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 837 of its 2023-2024 ID4 electric vehicles because the fasteners securing the passenger-side frontal air bag inflator may be loose. This defect can prevent the air bag from deploying correctly during a collision, significantly increasing the risk of injury to the front passenger. Volkswagen dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the passenger-side air bag free of charge.

Risk

If the fasteners are loose, the air bag inflator may shift or fail to deploy with the intended force and position during a crash, which can lead to more severe injuries for the occupant.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is a 2023 or 2024 Volkswagen ID4 model.
  2. Contact any authorized Volkswagen dealer to schedule a free inspection and potential replacement of the passenger frontal air bag assembly.
  3. If you have questions, contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 69E8.
  4. Call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
