Ford Motor Company: 2023 F-150 Lightning Recalled for Battery Fire and Power Loss Risk

Summary

Ford is recalling 216 of its 2023 F-150 Lightning electric trucks because fasteners inside the high-voltage battery pack were not tightened correctly during manufacturing. These loose fasteners can cause electrical arcing, which significantly increases the risk of the battery catching fire. Additionally, the electrical issue can lead to a sudden loss of drive power while the vehicle is in motion. Ford dealers will inspect and secure these fasteners or replace damaged battery components at no cost to owners.

Risk

If the battery junction box fasteners are loose, electricity can jump between parts, creating intense heat and sparks known as arcing, which can ignite a fire. Furthermore, a failure in this electrical connection can cause the vehicle to lose power unexpectedly, which increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Confirm your vehicle is affected by calling a Ford dealer or checking your VIN on the NHTSA website at www.nhtsa.gov/recalls.
  2. Contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and mention recall number 24S11 to schedule your free repair.
  3. Take your 2023 F-150 Lightning to an authorized Ford dealer; technicians will inspect the junction box bus bar fasteners and repair them or replace any damaged parts for free.
  4. For additional information, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
