Summary

Volkswagen is recalling approximately 62,538 vehicles, including 2019 Golf, Golf Alltrack, Golf Sportwagen, and 2019-2020 Golf GTI and Jetta models equipped with conventional ignition switches. The ignition switch in these vehicles can fail, particularly when exposed to high-temperature environments. This defect can cause the vehicle's electrical system to shut down unexpectedly while in use. Dealers will replace the faulty ignition switch with a new one at no cost to owners.

Risk

If the ignition switch fails while driving, the engine may suddenly stall and the electrical system could shut down, which significantly increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is a 2019 Golf, Golf Alltrack, or Golf Sportwagen, or a 2019-2020 Golf GTI or Jetta equipped with a conventional (key-turn) ignition switch.
  2. Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer to schedule a free replacement of the ignition switch.
  3. If you have additional questions, contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 28H7.
  4. For further assistance, call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
