Nissan North America, Inc.: Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport Recalled for Collapsing Ignition Key

Summary

Nissan North America is recalling approximately 712,458 vehicles, specifically 2014-2020 Rogue and 2017-2022 Rogue Sport models equipped with a jackknife-style ignition key. The internal mechanism of these keys can weaken over time, causing the key to collapse into a folded position while the vehicle is being driven. This defect is dangerous because if a driver accidentally touches the collapsed key, the engine could shut off mid-drive, disabling power steering and braking assistance. Nissan dealers will provide a free repair by installing a specialized spacer into the key slot to prevent the key from folding.

Risk

If the ignition key collapses while driving, the driver may inadvertently bump the key and turn off the engine. This causes a sudden loss of engine power and may prevent the airbags from deploying in the event of a crash, significantly increasing the risk of serious injury or a collision.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected: This recall involves 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue and 2017-2022 Nissan Rogue Sport vehicles that use a 'jackknife' style flip key rather than a push-button start.
  2. Check your key: If your key has a blade that flips out from the fob, it is a jackknife style key subject to this recall.
  3. Contact an authorized Nissan dealer to schedule a free repair. Dealers will insert a spacer into the key slot to ensure the key stays in the open position while in the ignition.
  4. If you have questions, contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 and mention recall number R22C5.
  5. For additional information or to check your VIN, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
