Igloo Recalls Marine Coolers Due to Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards

Summary

Igloo has recalled approximately 60,000 Marine Elite line coolers because the stainless-steel latch can automatically lock when the lid is closed. This defect can trap someone inside the airtight container, posing a serious risk of suffocation. One incident has already been reported involving a child who became trapped inside a cooler but was fortunately rescued by an adult. These white coolers were sold in various sizes between January 2015 and March 2019 at retailers like West Marine and Amazon.com.

Risk

The cooler's latch is designed in a way that it can snap shut and lock automatically, preventing anyone inside from opening the lid. Because the container is airtight, a person trapped inside faces a high risk of suffocation and death.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your cooler to see if it is an Igloo Marine Elite model. Affected coolers are white with stainless-steel latches and have the 'Igloo' logo embossed on the metal latch and the outside of the cooler.
  2. Look for a label on the cooler that says 'Igloo Marine Elite Cooler' along with one of the following sizes: 54, 72, 94, 110, or 150 quarts.
  3. Verify if your specific model is one of the following: Igloo Marine Elite 54 quart, 72 quart, Legend 94 quart, Glide 110 quart (has wheels and a metal handle), or Contour 150 quart.
  4. Immediately move any affected coolers out of the reach of children until they are repaired.
  5. Contact Igloo toll-free at 866-509-3503 between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or online at www.igloocoolers.com (click on 'Contact Us') for instructions on how to remove and dispose of the old latch and to receive a free replacement latch.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have any additional questions or concerns.
