iDevices Recalls Temperature Probes Due to Ingestion Hazard

Summary

About 48,500 iDevices Pro Ambient Temperature Probes and Pro Meat Probes are being recalled because a plastic insulator inside the stainless steel rod can melt and fall into food during normal use. These probes were sold both separately and as part of iGrill2 thermometer sets between May 2014 and June 2014. The firm has received 11 reports of the probes overheating and melting, though no injuries have been reported to date. iDevices is offering free replacements to all affected consumers.

Risk

The internal plastic insulator is not sufficiently heat resistant and can melt, potentially contaminating food with plastic fragments that pose a serious ingestion hazard.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the recalled temperature probes and check your product to see if it is affected.
  2. Identify recalled probes by looking at the base of the metal tube where it connects to the braided steel cable; recalled probes have only two indentations or 'crimps' in this area, whereas updated safe probes have three.
  3. Verify your packaging for the following UPC numbers: 852931005148, 852931005193, 852931005162, or 852931005216.
  4. Contact iDevices LLC toll-free at (888) 313-7019 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. ET Monday through Friday to request a free replacement probe.
  5. You can also visit www.iDevicesinc.com and click on the 'Pro Probe Recall' link at the bottom of the page for more information and to process your replacement.
  6. For additional questions, call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
