Fontaine Modification: 2020-2023 Elgin Sweepers Recalled for Hydrostatic Pump Failure

Summary

Fontaine Modification is recalling 56 model year 2020-2023 Elgin Crosswind 1 and Elgin Whirlwind 1 sweepers built on Peterbilt 220 chassis. A stainless steel air compressor line can rub against and damage an oil suction tube, which leads to the failure of the hydrostatic pump. Fontaine will provide instructions to Elgin Sweeper Company dealers to reroute the air line and repair any damage at no cost to owners.

Risk

If the hydrostatic pump fails, the vehicle can experience a sudden loss of power and limited speeds. This unexpected change in vehicle performance increases the risk of a crash while the sweeper is in operation.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is an Elgin Crosswind 1 or Elgin Whirlwind 1 sweeper built on a Peterbilt 220 chassis between model years 2020 and 2023.
  2. Contact an authorized Elgin Sweeper Company dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair. Dealers will reroute the engine air compressor supply line and repair any damage to the oil suction tube.
  3. If you have questions regarding this recall, contact Fontaine Modification customer service at 1-800-366-8246.
  4. For additional information, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
