Ford Motor Company: 2023 Transit Vehicles Recalled for Inoperative Windshield Defogger

Summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 4,804 of its 2023 Transit vehicles that are equipped with the Special Vehicle Operations Accessory Service Kit #1 or #2 and a High Specification Vehicle Interface Connector. When these accessory kits are installed, an auxiliary wire harness error disables the vehicle's entire heating, air-conditioning, and ventilation (HVAC) system, including the critical windshield defrosting and defogging functions. Because these vehicles cannot clear the windshield as required by federal safety standards, Ford dealers will modify the wiring harness to restore full HVAC functionality at no cost to owners.

Risk

A disabled windshield defrosting and defogging system can severely reduce the driver's visibility during cold or humid weather conditions. This lack of visibility significantly increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is a 2023 Ford Transit equipped with the Special Vehicle Operations Accessory Service Kit #1 or #2 and a High Specification Vehicle Interface Connector.
  2. Check your vehicle's identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA website or contact a Ford dealer to confirm if your specific van is part of the recall group 23C02.
  3. Contact any Ford or Lincoln dealer to schedule a free repair. Dealers will modify the auxiliary wire harness to include a necessary twisted loop that enables the HVAC system.
  4. If you have already paid for repairs related to this issue, ask your dealer about Ford's reimbursement plan for this recall.
  5. For further information, contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 23C02.
  6. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional support.
