Summary

Motiv Power Systems is recalling 28 of its 2021-2023 F-450 and 2020 F-59 school buses equipped with the Gen 5 EPIC powertrain. The vehicle control software may incorrectly identify a safety issue and shut down the high voltage battery system while the bus is in operation. To fix this, Motiv will provide a free over-the-air (OTA) software update to all affected vehicles.

Risk

A sudden shutdown of the high voltage batteries leads to an immediate loss of drive power and the loss of power assist for steering and braking. This significantly increases the risk of a crash, especially while the vehicle is carrying passengers.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your school bus is affected: this recall specifically involves 2021-2023 F-450 and 2020 F-59 school buses equipped with the Motiv Gen 5 EPIC powertrain.
  2. Check your mail for an owner notification letter, which Motiv began mailing to affected owners on September 5, 2024.
  3. Verify if your vehicle has received the over-the-air (OTA) software update; Motiv is releasing this update free of charge to resolve the software misclassification issue.
  4. Contact Motiv Power Systems customer service at 1-650-458-4804 if you have questions regarding the software update or to confirm your vehicle's status.
  5. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional information concerning recall 24V-602.
