Summary

Motiv Power Systems is recalling approximately 200 vehicles, including certain 2021-2024 E-450, 2019-2023 F-59, and 2019-2020 F-53 models equipped with the Gen 5 EPIC powertrain. The vehicle control software may incorrectly identify a safety issue and suddenly shut down the high-voltage batteries while the vehicle is in motion. This defect can lead to an immediate loss of drive power and the disabling of critical safety features like power steering and brake assist. Motiv will provide a free over-the-air (OTA) software update to resolve the issue.

Risk

If the high-voltage batteries shut down unexpectedly, the driver will lose the ability to accelerate and will experience a sudden increase in steering and braking effort. These conditions significantly increase the risk of a crash, especially at higher speeds or in heavy traffic.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle identification to see if it is one of the affected models: 2021-2024 E-450, 2019-2023 F-59, or 2019-2020 F-53 equipped with a Motiv Gen 5 EPIC powertrain.
  2. Verify if your vehicle has already received the over-the-air (OTA) software update by contacting Motiv customer service.
  3. Contact Motiv customer service at 1-650-458-4804 to confirm the status of your vehicle and ensure the free software remedy is applied.
  4. For additional information or to report concerns, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
