Summary

BMW of North America is recalling 31 hybrid electric vehicles, including 2022-2024 iX xDrive50 and 2023 i4 models (eDrive35, eDrive40, and M50). These vehicles may have improperly secured electrical connections in the high voltage battery cell monitoring circuit. This defect can lead to a sudden engine stall while driving, and dealers will replace the monitoring circuit free of charge.

Risk

An improperly secured electrical connection can fail, causing the vehicle's engine to stall unexpectedly. This loss of power while driving increases the likelihood of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is one of the 31 affected units by checking the model and year: 2022-2024 BMW iX xDrive50, or 2023 BMW i4 eDrive35, i4 eDrive40, or i4 M50.
  2. Contact an authorized BMW dealer to schedule a free replacement of the high voltage battery cell monitoring circuit.
  3. If you have already received a notification letter (mailed around June 22, 2023), follow the instructions provided to arrange your service appointment.
  4. Contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 if you have questions regarding this recall or to verify your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  5. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
