Gillig, LLC: HV Air Compressor Is Not On Protective HVIL Loop

Summary

Gillig, LLC is recalling approximately 332 Low Floor style transit buses from the 2023-2024 model years. These high-voltage electric buses may have an air compressor that is not connected to the High Voltage Interlock Loop (HVIL) safety system, meaning the system cannot detect if a power cable becomes loose or disconnected. To fix this, dealers will install an additional electrical harness to properly connect the compressor to the safety loop free of charge.

Risk

If the HVIL safety system fails to detect a loose or disconnected power cable on the high-voltage air compressor, it cannot alert the operator to the fault, which significantly increases the risk of electrical shock to maintenance personnel or operators.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your fleet includes 2023-2024 Gillig Low Floor style transit buses affected by NHTSA recall 24V959.
  2. Contact GILLIG customer service at 1-800-735-1500 to confirm if your specific VINs are impacted and to schedule the free repair.
  3. Dealers will install an additional electrical harness, extending the HVIL loop to the air compressor, free of charge.
  4. If you have additional questions, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
