Summary

Approximately 41,000 HP lithium-ion battery packs are being recalled because they can overheat, causing the plastic casing to melt or char. HP has received seven reports of batteries overheating, which includes four instances of property damage totaling about $4,000. These black batteries were sold with various HP and Compaq notebook computers, as well as separately, at major retailers like Best Buy, Walmart, and Staples between March 2013 and August 2015. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled batteries and contact HP for a free replacement.

Risk

The lithium-ion battery cells can experience a thermal event while in use or charging, leading to overheating that poses significant fire and burn hazards to users and nearby property. Seven incidents have already been reported where the batteries melted or charred during operation.
