Horizon Hobby Recalls Blade 700 X Pro Series Helicopter Kits, Spindle Sets Due To Injury Hazard

Summary

Horizon Hobby is recalling about 600 Blade 700 X Pro Series radio-controlled helicopter kits and replacement spindle sets because a critical washer in the main rotor can fail. If this washer fails, the rotor blades can fly off the helicopter while it is in use, which could seriously injure the operator or people nearby. The recall includes the Blade 700 X Pro Series Kit (BLH5725), the Pro Series Combo (BLH5725C), and the replacement spindle set (BLH5703) sold between July 2013 and August 2013. No injuries have been reported, but consumers should immediately stop using these helicopters and contact Horizon Hobby for a free repair kit.

Risk

A flat silver washer that holds the main rotor blade grips in place can fail during flight. This causes the main rotor blades to detach from the 12-pound helicopter while they are spinning at high speeds, creating a projectile hazard for anyone in the vicinity.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the Blade 700 X Pro Series helicopter and do not attempt to fly it.
  2. Identify if you have a recalled product by checking the model numbers: Blade 700 X Pro Series Kit (model BLH5725), Blade 700 X Pro Series Combo (model BLH5725C), or Spindle Set (model BLH5703).
  3. Locate the model number for the kits and combos on the UPC label at one end of the product packaging, or on the front of the packaging for the replacement spindle set.
  4. Check the physical appearance: the helicopter is about 53 inches long with a blue, yellow, black, and silver canopy featuring a '700 X' logo, and black/gray blades marked with 'Revolution'.
  5. Contact Horizon Hobby toll-free at (877) 504-0233 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. CT Sunday to receive free replacement washers and installation instructions.
  6. Visit www.horizonhobby.com and click on 'Product Recalls' under the 'Legal' section at the bottom of the page for more information and to request your repair parts.
  7. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
