Homelite Recalls Electric Blower Vacuums Due to Laceration Hazard; Sold Exclusively at Home Depot

Summary

Homelite is recalling approximately 241,000 electric blower vacuums in the U.S. (and 13,600 in Canada) because objects drawn into the unit during vacuum mode can break through the plastic housing. This defect can cause sharp debris or pieces of the housing to strike the user, posing a laceration hazard. While one incident has been reported, no injuries have been documented at this time. These red and black units were sold exclusively at Home Depot stores and online during 2012 for about $40.

Risk

When the device is used in vacuum mode, hard objects pulled into the intake can shatter the internal plastic housing, causing sharp fragments to be ejected toward the operator.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the label on the left side of the red motor housing to identify your model and serial number.
  2. Verify if your unit is Model UT42120 with a serial number between BMP3540001 and BMR2103100.
  3. Verify if your unit is Model UT42120A with a serial number between BMR2120001 and BMR3421250.
  4. If your blower vacuum matches these model and serial numbers, stop using it immediately.
  5. Contact Homelite at (800) 597-9624 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.homelite.com and click on 'Safety Notices' to arrange for a full refund.
  6. For additional questions, call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
