Summary

Homelite is recalling approximately 823,000 electric blower vacuums (and an additional 41,000 in Canada) because they can overheat, spark, and catch fire. There have been 1,369 reports of these units sparking, smoking, or burning, including one report of a minor injury. This recall includes the red and black 12 amp models UT42120, UT42120A, and UT42121 sold at Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlets between January 2010 and March 2015. Consumers should immediately stop using these products and return them to the store for a full refund.

Risk

The blower vacuum's internal components can overheat during operation, causing the device to arc, spark, or catch fire while being held by the user. This creates a significant risk of fire damage to the home and thermal burn injuries to the consumer.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately stop using the Homelite 12 amp electric blower vacuum and unplug it from any power source.
  2. Check the label on the left side of the red motor housing to see if it lists model number UT42120, UT42120A, or UT42121.
  3. Look for the text 'Homelite BlowerVac 2 Speed Powerful 220 MPH' printed on the side of the motor housing and on the black plastic blower tube to confirm it is the affected product.
  4. Return the recalled blower vacuum to any Home Depot or Direct Tools Factory Outlet store to receive a full refund.
  5. Contact Homelite Consumer Products at 800-597-9624 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.homelite.com and click on 'Safety Notices' for more information.
  6. Call the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 if you have additional questions regarding this recall.
