Hobby Lobby Recalls Easter and July 4th Light-Up Spinner Toys Due to Choking and Ingestion Hazards

Summary

Hobby Lobby is recalling approximately 43,400 Easter and July 4th-themed light-up spinner toys because the battery cover can detach and expose small coin cell batteries. If children access these batteries, they pose serious choking and internal chemical ingestion hazards. There has been one reported incident of a 14-month-old child ingesting a battery, which required an x-ray. These toys were sold at Hobby Lobby and Mardel stores nationwide between February and April 2017 for about $5.

Risk

The plastic battery compartment cover can come off during play, allowing a child to access and swallow the three small LR44 coin cell batteries inside. Swallowed batteries can cause choking or severe internal chemical burns if they become lodged in the digestive tract.

What You Should Do

  1. Immediately take the light-up spinner toys away from children and stop using them.
  2. Check the handle of the spinner for the name 'Hobby Lobby' and item numbers 9130033 (Easter themes) or 9130082 (July 4th theme) to confirm if your toy is affected.
  3. Identify the Easter spinners by their blue dome with a pink bunny or yellow dome with a yellow and orange chicken; identify the July 4th spinner by its red handle and blue dome with white stars.
  4. Return the recalled spinner to any Hobby Lobby or Mardel store for a remedy. Consumers with a receipt will receive a full refund, and those without a receipt will receive store credit.
  5. For additional information, contact Hobby Lobby Stores at 800-326-7931 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit www.hobbylobby.com and click on the 'Recall' tab.
  6. Contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772 for further questions regarding this recall.
