Summary

Kia America, Inc. is recalling 2,689 of its 2015-2019 Soul EV vehicles equipped with an E400 battery. The high-voltage battery pack in these electric vehicles can experience an electrical short-circuit while the vehicle is being driven. Dealers will update the battery management software or replace the battery system as needed to prevent potential hazards.

Risk

A short-circuit in the high-voltage battery pack significantly increases the risk of a vehicle fire while driving. If the new software detects abnormal battery voltage, it will trigger an EV warning light, limit the battery's charging capacity, and reduce the vehicle's power to mitigate safety risks.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking if you own a 2015-2019 Kia Soul EV equipped with the E400 battery.
  2. Contact an authorized Kia dealer to schedule a free appointment to have your battery management system and software updated.
  3. Monitor your dashboard for the EV warning light; if the light illuminates or you notice reduced vehicle power or limited charging capacity, take the vehicle to a dealer immediately as the battery may require a full replacement.
  4. If you have questions, contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and reference recall number SC267.
  5. For further assistance, you may contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
