Summary

BMW is recalling approximately 12,535 of its 2020-2024 MINI Hardtop 2 Door (Cooper SE) vehicles. This recall was issued because faults in the high voltage battery or its system can occur, potentially leading to a short circuit. If a short circuit happens, it can cause the battery to overheat and may result in a vehicle fire, even while the vehicle is parked. Owners will receive a free software update from dealers that can detect these faults and discharge the battery to a safe state.

Risk

A short circuit in the high voltage battery increases the risk of a fire. If the vehicle displays a warning message, it should be parked outdoors and away from structures immediately to prevent the fire from spreading to buildings.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your vehicle to see if it is a 2020-2024 MINI Hardtop 2 Door (Cooper SE) model.
  2. If a warning message is displayed on your vehicle's dashboard, immediately park the vehicle outside and away from structures until the repair is finished.
  3. Contact an authorized BMW or MINI dealer to schedule a free software update for your vehicle.
  4. For further information or to ask questions, contact BMW customer service at 1-866-275-6464 (1-866-ASK-MINI).
  5. Call the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information regarding this recall.
