Chrysler (FCA US, LLC): Jeep Wrangler PHEV Recalled for High Voltage Battery Fire Risk

Summary

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling approximately 32,125 model year 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) vehicles. The high voltage batteries in these vehicles may fail internally, which can cause the vehicle to catch fire while it is being driven or while it is parked. To address this risk, dealers will update the battery pack software and, if necessary, replace the entire high voltage battery pack assembly at no cost to the owner.

Risk

The internal failure of the high voltage battery creates a significant fire hazard whether the vehicle is in operation or stationary. Because these fires can occur while parked, owners are advised to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures to prevent the fire from spreading to homes or buildings.

What You Should Do

  1. Check if your vehicle is a 2021-2023 Jeep Wrangler Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) affected by recall number 89A.
  2. Park this vehicle outdoors, away from structures — do NOT park in a garage or near buildings due to the risk of a vehicle fire.
  3. Stop recharging the vehicle immediately; use only the gasoline engine until the recall repair has been performed.
  4. Contact an authorized Chrysler or Jeep dealer to schedule a free repair, which includes a battery software update and a potential battery pack replacement.
  5. For further assistance, contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403 and reference recall number 89A.
  6. Call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
