Ford Motor Company: Mustang Mach-E Recalled for Battery Contactor Overheating

Summary

Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 34,762 Mustang Mach-E vehicles from the 2021 and 2022 model years that are equipped with an extended range battery. The high voltage battery main contactors in these vehicles can overheat, which may cause the car to suddenly lose drive power while in motion. Owners of vehicles previously repaired under a different recall (number 22V-412) must have this new repair completed as well. Dealers will replace the high voltage battery junction box free of charge to resolve the issue.

Risk

If the high voltage battery contactor overheats, it can result in an immediate loss of drive power. This sudden loss of propulsion while driving increases the risk of a crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Identify if your vehicle is affected by checking if it is a 2021-2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E equipped with an extended range battery.
  2. Check your vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website or contact a Ford dealer to see if your car is part of recall 23S56.
  3. If your vehicle is included in this recall, even if it was previously repaired under recall 22V-412, you must schedule a new repair with an authorized Ford dealer.
  4. Contact a Ford dealer to arrange for a free replacement of the high voltage battery junction box.
  5. For more information, you may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 and reference recall number 23S56.
  6. Contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for further assistance.
