Summary

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is recalling approximately 5.6 million LS-15 AC power cords distributed with HP and Compaq notebook and mini-notebook computers and accessories like docking stations. These black power cords can overheat, and HP has received 29 reports of the cords melting or charring, causing two minor burns and 13 instances of property damage. The affected products were sold worldwide at computer and electronics stores, authorized dealers, and at hp.com between September 2010 and June 2012. HP is providing a free replacement power cord to all affected customers.

Risk

The power cord's internal components can overheat during use, causing the insulation to melt or char, which creates a significant risk of fire and can cause burns to consumers.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your AC power cord for an 'LS-15' molded mark on the end that connects to the AC adapter.
  2. If your power cord is marked with 'LS-15', immediately stop using it and unplug it from the wall outlet.
  3. Contact Hewlett-Packard toll-free at (877) 219-6676 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday or visit www.hp.com and click 'Recalls' at the bottom of the page to order a free replacement power cord.
  4. You may continue to use your notebook computer safely using only the battery power while waiting for your replacement cord.
  5. For additional questions, contact the CPSC Hotline at 800-638-2772.
