Comoto Holdings, Inc.: Bilt Grommet Youth Helmets Recalled for Failure to Protect from Impact

Summary

Comoto Holdings is recalling approximately 2,362 Bilt Grommet Youth and Grommet Bolt Youth motorcycle helmets because they may not provide enough protection during a crash. The affected helmets, available in sizes Small Youth (SY), Medium Youth (MY), and Large Youth (LY), fail to meet federal safety standards for impact protection. Comoto is offering a free replacement with a compliant BILT helmet or a store credit for the value of the helmet.

Risk

The helmets do not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 218 for impact attenuation, meaning they cannot adequately absorb the force of a head impact. This failure significantly increases the risk of serious head injury or death for a child wearing the helmet during a motorcycle crash.

What You Should Do

  1. Check your helmet to see if it is a Bilt Grommet Youth or Grommet Bolt Youth model with part numbers BLH137 or BLH138.
  2. Verify the size of the helmet; this recall specifically affects sizes SY (Small Youth), MY (Medium Youth), and LY (Large Youth).
  3. If you have an affected helmet, stop using it immediately to ensure the safety of the rider.
  4. Contact Comoto's customer service at 1-800-292-5343 to arrange for a free replacement with a compliant BILT model helmet or to receive a credit to purchase a new helmet.
  5. For additional questions, you can contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
