Summary

Kia America, Inc. is recalling approximately 1,730,192 vehicles, including various models of the Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Forte Koup, Sportage, K900, Optima, Optima Hybrid, Soul, Rio, Sorento, and Rondo. The Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) in these vehicles may experience an electrical short circuit while the car is parked or being driven. Kia will have dealers replace the HECU fuse with a new one to prevent this issue from occurring. This repair is provided entirely free of charge.

Risk

The electrical short within the HECU can cause a fire in the engine compartment. Because this fire can occur even while the engine is turned off, owners must park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures to prevent the fire from spreading to homes or buildings.

What You Should Do

  1. Park this vehicle outdoors, away from structures — do NOT park in a garage or carport due to the fire risk while the vehicle is stationary.
  2. Check the following list to see if your vehicle is affected: 2010-2019 Borrego, 2014-2016 Cadenza, 2010-2013 Forte/Forte Koup/Sportage, 2015-2018 K900, 2011-2015 Optima, 2011-2013 Optima Hybrid/Soul, 2012-2017 Rio, 2011-2014 Sorento, or 2010-2011 Rondo.
  3. Contact your local Kia dealer to schedule a free appointment to have the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) fuse replaced.
  4. For further information or questions, you may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542 and mention recall number SC284.
  5. You can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
