Head Rush Technologies has recalled about 2,200 TRUBLUE iQ and iQ+ Auto Belay Devices because they can fail to retract. If the device does not retract properly, it poses a severe fall hazard to climbers, which could result in serious injury or death. These gray and blue devices were sold online between November 2022 and February 2024. The firm has received 31 reports of retraction issues, including one incident where a consumer fell.
The internal retraction mechanism can fail, leaving the climbing line slack instead of pulling it taut as the climber ascends. This prevents the device from catching the climber during a fall or safely lowering them, potentially resulting in a fall from height. One fall has been reported so far.
Consumers should immediately stop using recalled auto belay devices, and contact Head Rush Technologies for a free inspection and repair.
