Summary

Google and HP have recalled approximately 145,000 HP Chromebook 11 power supply chargers because they can overheat and melt during use. There have been nine reports of chargers melting, including one consumer who suffered a small burn and one report of property damage to a pillow. These black chargers were sold between October 2013 and November 2013, both separately and included with the HP Chromebook 11. Consumers should immediately stop using these chargers and contact Google for a free replacement.

Risk

The internal components of the charger can fail and cause the plastic housing to overheat and melt. This poses a direct fire hazard to the surrounding area and a burn hazard to anyone touching the device while it is hot.

What You Should Do

  1. Check the face of your charger (the side with the wall outlet pins) for model number MU15-N1052-A00S.
  2. Verify if your charger is black, measures approximately 1¾ inches by ¾ inches, and has a 6-foot long cord with a micro-USB connector.
  3. Immediately stop using the recalled charger and unplug it from the wall outlet.
  4. Contact Google toll-free at (866) 628-1371 between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m. PT, seven days a week, to request a free replacement charger.
